Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

The Tenth Doctor - One of Korra's lesser-known problems is that she, by nature, takes the long view of things - which involves some very strong moral stances. This comes from being at the far end of a 10,000 year cycle of reincarnation - and once having had direct access to those memories and personalities. This hasn't been something she has traditionally talked to her canon friends about, but with the Tenth Doctor (and, also, Oscar) there is an instant understanding that allowed her to not only create a new, tight bond but also interact with somebody who understood this key part of her nature. Simply talking about it was, in a way, therapeutic for her - and helped her to keep her moral compass in a setting that worked actively to degrade it.

Luz Noceda - Korra's attachment to Luz was unexpected and strong. Luz's youthful enthusiasm for everything and her strong reactions to Deerington stimuli reminded Korra from the start of her own time as a youthful Avatar - and to no small extent, she started to take a sisterly view of Luz. This was a new development for someone who had spent her life an only child, and underlined her already extant predilection towards acquiring found family. The key moment for the two of them was a discussion on what it meant to take a life, which helped to reinforce Korra's belief that holding onto principles in a chaotic situation is all the more important.

Prince Wu- Prior to arriving in Deerington, Korra's view of Wu was, at best, a neutral one. Throughout canon, theirs had not been the strongest relationship. But getting to see him in the constant stress of Deerington quickly changed her opinion. For a start, his budding relationship with Mako helped to get her to re-evaluate her own long-held thinking, and then seeing him take on the challenges of Deerington without any powers or abilities helped her see his courage apart from the flash that had, previously, been his most apparent feature.

Vira-Lorr, Rei Kurosawa, Lysithea - Three shades of a similar experience, here - once again, people who understand the burden both of Korra's powers and her deep fear that they might be misused. She even went so far as to develop a plan with Vira-Lorr to ensure that, if she were to fall into darkness, that Vira-Lorr would know to put a stop to it, and how. All three have been people Korra can talk to, even in disagreement, about what it means to put yourself on the line - and they remain perhaps the only people (other than Asami) who can be guaranteed to be capable of successfully talking Korra down. This was best seen as the Deerington world collapsed, and Korra was working herself to the bone, fruitlessly - it was the ability to talk to her that these women had that successfully got her to pull back from what might have killed her, had she carried on much longer.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Sam Winchester and Darth Maul - Though she has since come to, at least tentatively, like Sam Winchester - and still has not met Darth Maul in person - their presence has had a negative impact on Korra in that their casual use of violence has provoked some of her worst instincts. In the case of Maul, it was Maul's use of violence on people periphery to Korra - namely people that Luz cared about - that brought out instincts to use violence herself in order to stop it. This complicated her uneasy feelings about Deerington's populace when an attempt was made to set a mob on Maul - prompting some conflicted feelings on how easy it was to misuse power. With Sam Winchester, his killing (while possessed by Lucifer) of Wu sent her into a tailspin - she set out to exact revenge. While she did not complete this task - and ultimately made it possible for Sam to regain some control of himself - that she could be provoked into doing this carries deep worries and fears for her. It reminded her of the very thin line separating hero from villain - and prompted her to begin thinking that Deerington as a place was deliberately set up to degrade the difference between the two.

Eddie Kaspbrak, Mako, and the Eggs - When the question of the eggs arose, to Korra there was only one very simple answer - nurture. Her experiences had driven her to double-down on her belief in the very simple maxim that 'murder is wrong', regardless of the justifications being presented. This brought her into sharp conflict with other members of the community, whose more morally relativistic views were not ones she shared, nor indeed could she - to share them would mean not being Korra, and not being the Avatar. This provoked furious verbal conflict, which in the case of Eddie exposed her to the more modern style of 'debate' to which Korra is unused - the demonizing, trollish approach to discourse that makes up so much of modern 'discussion' - which provoked deep revulsion in her. The long-term effects of this are uncertain, though a community that (at least in part) is very ready and indeed eager to kill in revenge is one that Korra may well come to reject in time, though what that entails is difficult to foresee. Mako's participation in this was, ultimately, in getting to her to commit an act of mercy - letting Cynthia's egg go and compromising Korra's beliefs to do so. While it was to Cynthia's wishes, it was still a wilful act of violence to take someone's life - and thus deeply wounding to Korra, who already has profound regrets about the lives lost and damaged just by her being the Avatar in the past. Her relationship with Mako was already complicated and proceeding on two tracks, one positive and the other more problematic - this specific event caused her a brief breakdown, one that also carries with it uncertain consequences.

The Waste Korra - Towards the end of the original Deerington, Korra was confronted with a dying Waste - already in a bad emotional state from burying other Wastes, the revelation of it being a version of herself was shocking in the extreme. Worse still was learning that this version of herself had used Bloodbending - the most taboo and abhorrent form of bending - on others and themselves to stay alive as long as they had. What this taught Korra was two-fold. First, that she had the capability to use bloodbending - something she has had used against her and deeply fears that Deerington will compel or degrade her into using against others. Second, that a version of her - a Korra that is, perhaps, just a series of events away - would utilize such an invasive, agonizing ability against other people.
